About STOTT PILATES

STOTT PILATES™ is a contemporary, anatomically-based approach to the original exercise method pioneered by the lat Joseph Pilates. Co-founded by Lindsay and Moira Merrithew, along with a team of physical therapists/physiotherapists, sports medicine and fitness professionals, have spent over two decades refining the STOTT PILATES™ method of exercise and equipment.

STOTT PILATES™ incorporates modern exercise principals, and applies proven and accepted practices in biomechanics, rehabilitation and athletic performance enhancement. STOTT PILATES™ exercises are designed to restore the natural curves of the spine and rebalance the muscles around the joints. Emphasis is placed on pelvic and scapular stabilisation, and integrations of all the parts of the body into one. This technique is able to be modified for many different body types and abilities, making it applicable to sport-specific training and everyday life.

And with good reason. Such methods not only yield remarkable results - like pain-free posture and longer, leaner muscles - and they actually feel good to do.

ABOUT OUR TEAM

Sarah Burrows

With a life-long interest in dance, Sarah originally trained as a professional classical dancer. After an injury ruled out a career in ballet, she turned to Pilates for rehabilitation. The effectiveness of the sessions inspired her to pursue a career in Pilates.

Upon completion of her Diploma in Dance Performance, Sarah travelled overseas to train in the STOTT PILATES™ method. Upon her return, Sarah opened Pulse Pilates in 2004. 

Sarah is a fully certified STOTT PILATES™ instructor.

"I enjoy helping people to re-discover their ability to move their bodies freely, without pain and stiffness. I have seen so many clients empowered by Pilates - reducing pain and giving them back their freedom. It is a very rewarding career."

Her areas of speciality include the rehabilitation of back pain, recovery from hip and knee injury/surgery, diaphragm and pelvic floor function, and pre/post-natal Pilates.

She has a special interest in Pilates for Dancers and Elite Athletes, 


Melissa James

Mel has been working at Pulse Pilates since 2010. Before teaching Pilates, she had an extensive dancing career in both New Zealand and abroad. She gained an Advanced Diploma in Dance Performance from the New Zealand School of Dance and then worked with the New Zealand Ballet Company and the Eric Languet and Dancers Company. Mel then attended the London Contemporary Dance School and later danced with The Latin Dance Company Sydney, and Dance Encore Productions Company in Japan.

Mel was introduced to Pilates whilst rehabilitating from a dance injury. She went on to complete a one year Pilates Rehabilitation Apprenticeship with Balance Physiotherapy and Pilates in Sydney. Following completion of her apprenticeship, Mel also completed the American POLESTAR Pilates International Accreditation in Mat and Studio work.

After moving back to New Zealand, and teaching in Wellington, Mel developed and taught the Bodyright Pilates Instructor Training Course for Physiotherapists and Osteopaths. In 2010, Mel moved with her family to Christchurch and joined the Pulse Pilates team.

During her 15 years of teaching Rehabilitation and Fitness-based Pilates to athletes, dancers and people with all kinds of injuries, Mel still loves the challenges and rewards that teaching Pilates offers.
